The Spirit of Helen Award is an annual Alberta Media Arts Alliance (AMAAS) award given in honour of Helen Folkmann, an artist and arts advocate whose creativity, activism, strength and determination inspired people across Canada. Helen passed away in 2004, and this award acknowledges an artist, cultural worker or advocate whose contributions to Alberta’s media arts community reflects Helen’s remarkable spirit.
Nominations: This award is open to all artists and cultural workers in Alberta. Individuals or organizations associated with the Alberta Media Arts community may nominate one candidate per year. Nominations must be received by June 15, 2010. Please include a biography of your nominee (max. one page) and a statement indicating why you are nominating this individual (max. one page). Nominations will be reviewed by an anonymous peer jury.
Award: $1,500 cash award and certificate. The award will be presented on June 26th at the 2010 AMAAS Film Festival Symposium in Calgary. The successful nominee should be available to attend. AMAAS is proud to present its annual Symposium in collaboration with Sled Island Film this year.
Sled Island Film began in 2009 by Jeanette Burman as a new extended addition to Sled Island Festival. In 2010, Sled Island Film will present the inaugural Festival of Festivals featuring showcases by over 14 film groups and festivals from around Alberta. Also for 2010, the Alberta Media Arts Alliance Society will be conducting a day of film related panels and workshops in partnership with Sled Island Film.

The symposium will serve a continental breakfast, lunch and reception appetizers. Symposium attendees will have the option to be lodged on campus at the new Hotel Alma or the University Residences. NUTV will be filming the symposium and uploading the panel discussions to the Internet for a larger film festival community to access.
